Mumbai, India

Pizza Metro Pizza a London based Neapolitan restaurant chain has opened their second outlet at Kemps corner after its foray into India in 2012 with their first store in Khar.  Most renowned for its meter long pizzas out of wood fired ovens, we finally managed to visit them last evening.

You enter the place and the first thing in sight is the oven and pizzaolos in action apart from the bar, high table seating and a few tables for fours. I thought that was it, a compact little well-designed place until I walked into another dining area and then figured the courtyard seating to finally end up in private dining room. With a total of approx 130 covers this place is very big and has a Café charm to it with all the energy on the floor. I understood it was run by Italian Chefs too, Ion and Daniel.

We started with a crisp Alois Lageder Pinot Grigio from Italy and a selection of antipasti, the luscious  Melanzane Parmigiana, Mozzarelline Frite (crumb fried mozzarella, I prefer the fresh one) and Palle di Riso (Crumb fried rice balls with cheese and ‘real’ green chilly), they were simple and flavorsome with fair portion sizes.  Then came the Napoli style Portobello pizza with mushrooms, truffle oil, rocket and Grana Padano Cheese  (a craft mostly run by Sikh families in Emilia Romagna), a drizzle of Olive oil on the wild rockets made it richer. We had this with a glass for fruity and sassy Sangiovese from Villa Giulli.  The food had done us in but we couldn’t resist the Spaghetti Aglio olio and Tagliatelle in Pesto.  They were supreme.  We ended our meal with a silky pannacotta and a rather heavy ricotta pie.  Pizza Metro Pizza Kemps Corner Mumbai (2)

The team headed by Varun Vohra was knowledgeable on their food bit and very enthusiastic, although they got it all wrong on wine temperatures and glasses initially.Overall it was a very cheerful dining experience in an ambiance which was made up of the décor, the people and the positive vibes.  The food is simple, pan to plate kinds for those expecting modern elements. A vegetarian meal for 2 without alcohol would be around Rs 2500.

P.S:  Group up to have their Meter long pizza, I hear it’s a different experience!

  1. That guy Varun or whatever he calls himself is one of shittiest humanbeings I had the displeasure of talking to, what a crass and lowly person, would fit well in dharavi.
