Mumbai, India
After wooing the SoBo crowd, the Sassy Spoon a restaurant by Rachel Goenka and Irfan Pabaney is all set to open up in Bandra, it replaces the erstwhile Mocha Mojo. It opens on the 24th of this month for public and we got a sneak peek of the menu a little sooner.
The place is bright and cheerful with colour pink being the brand highlight. Known for its quirky suitcase wall in its Nariman point outlet, this one has a vintage bread box theme. And the one I was more interested in was the bar, with pink cushioned stools and a high back bar adorned with mounted wooden wine racks on both sides, it looked inviting. The Very Berry Kalakhatta quickly arrived; a muddled berry drink with the local Kalakhatta spiked with rum and dusted with black salt was a perfect cooler and actually a great accompaniment throughout the meal. Little did we know what we had in store, a 3 page menu with 32 items was to be served to us, and for the vegetarian we had 18!! My highly recommended picks from what we tasted are as below:
White onion and smoked scarmoza:
Smoked, rich and flavoursome, it is a good bet for the cooler season.
Eggplant caponata, cherry tomatoes, pine nuts, balsamic reduction:
It comes on a flatbread (read thick crust Dominos), simple but powerful. Great to go with drinks. They have another with vegetables and roasted garlic.
Seared mushrooms with water chestnuts, scallions and orange rind topped with mac & queso
Comes in a skillet, this gravitated Mac and Cheese ( Queso is Spanish) with a base of crunchy water chestnuts, sharp scallions and aromatic zest make a great combo
Spaghetti with lemon beurre noisette, parmesan and roasted almonds
Can go back for this, it was the highlight of the meal just reinstating the fact that sometimes simplicity is what it takes. Must have!
Spinach and roasted pumpkin tart, creamy goats’ cheese
Comfort food or for a sophisticated meal, this tart does justice.
Caramel Peanut Tart
This one with a crumbly crust and a soft gooey inside with the crunchy peanut was the favourite of all. The caramel ice-cream with it took it to another level. Cannot miss this one!
Will go back after it opens to taste more epicurean stuff from their menu!
